The server of the Department of National Identity Card and Registration in Nepal has been down since 21st Baishakh 2083, affecting millions of service recipients. The department's director, Sanubabu Adhikari, has acknowledged that the server disruption is due to technical issues. A technical team is being formed to resolve the problem, but detailed information on this matter is not yet available.
With the server down, critical services such as birth registration, national identity number verification, and social security allowance renewals have been disrupted. As a result, service recipients are facing various difficulties. The department publicly announced on the 23rd that there was an issue with the server since the 21st, but the problem has yet to be resolved even after nine days.
During the day, service recipients have created tense situations with the staff, and some have even attempted physical altercations. The notice issued by the department states that there is an issue with the National Identity Management Information System, and maintenance work is ongoing. However, as of Tuesday, services have not been restored.
According to the department, the downtime has affected services related to correcting national identity card details, obtaining national identity numbers during birth registration, and biometric verification. This has also disrupted passport services, further complicating matters for citizens.
Although discussions have been held with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, no concrete solution has been proposed so far. Director Adhikari has stated that efforts are being made to resolve the issue, but it is uncertain when a solution will be reached.
This incident has raised questions about the reliability and stability of digital services in Nepal. As dependence on technology increases, such technical issues can have serious impacts on citizen services.
